Letters with a long arm

E
I've been writing a letter to my lover
Asus
Sayin' we must always be friends
E
And you know I'll never love another
Asus
The way that I love you

CHORUS
Asus E
I speak of you as one who knows
Asus E
The way that the muse wind blows

Asus
In the cold April nights
Asus
In a village of delights
E
I may hold another man's hand

Asus E
Another man's hand

VERSE
I've been writing a letter to the gardener
Sayin' the plants are just to tall
And soon they will want to take over
And ask us a terrible price

CHORUS
They have a secret scheme
To establish a new carbon regime

When I'm crawling round at night
They scratch and they bite
And they come out of the ground

Out of the ground

VERSE
I've been writing a letter to my children
Sayin' Daddies working hard
I've still not saved up to a million
The cost of living is severe

CHORUS
They write back with pictures and stories
Words I don't understand

Don't write before you can read
Tell 'em the plants are trying to breed
I know your mother's to blame

Your mother in name

Nick Helderman and the Immortals

Chords throughout: A  / G#m / D / E

Bpm: 148

VERSE
From the frozen North, to the deserts of the South
Across the oceans West, and mountains to the East
They all come to dance, and laugh and jump and sing
And perform in front of him, ‘cos

CHORUS:
Nick Helderman
Can make you immortal
If he snaps and it's his will
He can make time stand still

VERSE
He can make the prints, many many times
Give you a hundred faces, and millions of eyes
And make you very wide, and stand out very tall

On children’s bedroom walls, ‘cos

CHORUS:
Nick Helderman
Can make you multiply
If he snaps and it's his will
He can copy you until

VERSE
Every where you look, there’s a picture of your face

Send your image out, even into space
And soon you will be known, and you can be seen

In places you haven't been, ‘cos

CHORUS:
Nick Helderman
Can help you travel
If he snaps and it's his will
You could end up in Brazil

MIDDLE (A – E –
G#m – E)
All this power in one man

Too much power for one man

The waiting game

VERSE
G                                                D
I’ve been playing the waiting game
            C                                                G
For so long that I don’t know how to roll

Watching this thing play out from somewhere up there
And I forgot to take the remote control

BRIDGE
C                                                G
I’ve been building on this feeling so long
D                                                G
That I think it’s bigger than me

And I don’t know what I’d do if it’s gone
No point in carrying on (three taps)

CHORUS
(High) C                                                            D
I’m waiting for the moment, at the end of the night
That one perfect moment, when everything’s right
I’m holding for the last dance, my very last chance

VERSE
But at least I have the hope now
With in every detail and it’s perfect as it is,

It gets me up in the morning
It’s the vision I run to
It’s what I see when I go to sleep

BRIDGE
Cos if it don’t work out, the answers no
I’d be ten times worse off than before

Hope would be a terrible memory to have
Still one way or the other I’m a fool for waiting

CHORUS
So I’m holding for the moment, at the end of the night
That one perfect moment, man it has to be right
I’m holding for the last dance, my very last chance

MIDDLE
G                                                Am
If there’s a lesson I should leave
                        C                                                G
It’s don’t wait to think, tune your impulses to act first

Because if you wait without a taste and it builds up inside
There’s no taste that can quench such thirst

Fool for waiting

CHORUS
You don’t need that perfect moment, at the end of night
They’re all perfect moments, it doesn’t need to be right
Still I’m holding for the last dance, my very last chance

There is no perfect moment, no end to this night
That one perfect moment, won’t even be right
Still I’m holding for the last dance, my very last chance

The searcher

VERSE
C
I was once
Am
A restless soul
C
Obsessive and needy and greedy
Am
No self-control
F
Always pushing through for another door
G
But I'm not a searcher, anymore

VERSE
I used to hunt
For that perfect someone
The perfect eyes, the perfect laugh
What we'd become
And it would be clear that it was me they'd adore
I'm not a searcher anymore

VERSE
I used to work
Work was everything
Pushing harder, must do more
But always missing out something
Yes I was a maniac I'm sure
But I'm not a searcher anymore

MIDDLE
Am
It took a lifetime
F
Of desperate quests
Am
Of soaring hope
C
And failed tests
Am
To finally see, that no one completes me
F
I was already whole and full before
G
I'm not a searcher anymore

VERSE
I used to pray
To a higher power
I begged for luck, begged for fortune
That he could empower
And that he would be merciful, I would implore
But I'm not a searcher anymore

VERSE
I followed teachers
I thought wiser than me
They'd guide me along, give me the answers
How best to be
That they could show me, what life was for
But I'm not a searcher anymore

VERSE
I've searched for hope, happiness and health
I've searched for fame, fortune and wealth
I've searched for love, truth and ideas
I've searched for things as they disappeared

VERSE
But I'm not a searcher anymore
I'm not a searcher anymore
I'm not a searcher
I'm not a searcher

Note: the lyrics might sound a bit corny but I was watching La Vie en Rose last night and waiting for "Non, je ne regrette rien" which only came at the end. And it reminded me of My Way and there was so much similarity between the two. 60s songs. Orchestra and harp. Sung by singers about to retire after a lifetime of excess. (Powerful songs and I thought I'd like to have one I really belt out like that. The loud singing goes down well in bars. Particularly from girls who have power and technique but nothing to say.)

I don't have a melody for it yet, and it will have to wait until I have a voice old enough to sing it (and it's actually true).

It's also the angle I've been looking for to talk about religion. The frontal approach is too abrubt. It sounds like a pro-religious song until the end. I like grouping religion, alcohol, love, money and false prophets together as sins.

I own this house

G
Well I might look quiet and I might look sweet
C
The cutest toddler you're ever going to meet
G                                         D
With a smile to burn a hole through the coldest hearts

But in my home you'll see a different scene
Where I enforce my own special regime
With the same tactics they use in the CIA

My favourite weapon is sleep deprivation
It messes with their mind and their sense of perception
Soon they'll give me all the things I crave

After two months of riding without any rest
They'll be ready for the final flex
I'll finish them off one night with a primal scream

CHORUS
G
I own this house
C
I own this house
D
I own this house
G
I own this house

I'm three foot tall and barely two

But I decide what we get to do
It's my world and they only live her

They're doomed to fail cos they play clean
I'm not to proud to be truly mean
I use piss and shit and food and I spread it around

They drive me to day care, I drive them to drink
You can take a kid to pre-school but you can’t make him think
I know enough words to make them jump through hoops

Still they're trying to teach me make me grow up fast
I’m in no hurry gonna make this last
You know you’ve got it made when there's people to wipe your arse

CHORUS

[Lead]

Sometimes they try and up the game
Take me out of my royal domain
But I got more tricks than you've got time to learn

Cruising along at 40,000 feet
200 people within ear reach
For the next nine hours, no one’s gonna sleep

CHORUS
I own this plane x4

The only thing that sours my fun
Is the thought that one day my time might come
When they’re Grandparents now their lot is mine

They’ll see me covered in a little guy’s shit
Pinning him down when he’s throwing a fit
And look over with a smile brewed 30 years

CHORUS
Who owns this house? X4

Turned from my old gang

How will we ever meet

CHORUS

Will never grasp my hand
When I’m a fighting man

CHORUS

Here no-one knows my name
People all look the same
I walk unnoted steps
They don't know my rep

CHORUS

Well I was born to move
With fire in my shoes
I’m an unnoticed boy
Just future’s toy

CHORUS x2

I’m just gone

VERSE
C
It's on nights like these
G
When we are far apart
Em
A stillness sits inside
F
A melancholic in my heart

It's on nights like these
That my blessings mean so much
To be truly at one with all of this
I am thankful for the touch

It's on nights like these
When the world goes on alone
I would trade my cows and casings
To be locked inside our home

MIDDLE
Em Am
I look out across this city
With its lights and lives alive

I think of what goes on now
And what went on before

And of the things that are still to come
And what remains undone

VERSE

That I miss you more than words
To speak to nothing to the silence
And to know that I am heard

It's nights that these

I take what I can from the letters
And they leave me with the love

It's nights like these x3

Mortgage on mind

VERSE 1
E C#m

It's my single greatest cause of stress
I'm under emotional duress

Mr Pleasure Man

INTRO
Fm
There is a man here among us
The kind of man you might not notice
Bfm Fm
If you passed him walking quietly down the street

Bfm
But among the women folk
His name is passed in whispers
C#m Bfm
In a tone, reserved for Princes or Kings

[Whispered]
Bfm C#m
A password to the peak of ecstasy

CHORUS
Fm
They call him Mr Pleasure Man
Bfm
I’ll tell you how he got his name
C#m
From such feats of satisfaction
Fm
That put us mortal men to shame

VERSE
He says it all just with his smile
Not with words that’s not style
I’ve asked him but he keeps his secret safe

To me he looks quite homely
Perhaps even a little lonely
But the women see the blank cheques in his eyes
And in his thighs
He hears their cries

CHORUS
Mr Pleasure Man
Like a force from above
He dives down below
To stir the deepest depths of love

Instrumental: Same chords as chorus

VERSE
The Don Juans of Italy
And the lovers of Paris
Are nothing after the Cream of Catalunya

They know where the thrill is from
When they’ve sat on López-Cortón
He takes it seriously the business of fun
He’s never done
That’s why they come, to

CHORUS

OUTRO
Mr Pleasure Man

Except the one thing that he keeps
And that’s his liberty

Cold cold world

Capo 1

VERSE 1
C Am
As we started out I thought it was going well
C
It can be hard to tell
Am
In with my manager for a contract review

C
We just can’t renew

CHORUS
Am G C

VERSE 2
After all this time the only place I fit
Is on benefit
It was with some trepidation that I went online
For a very long time
Filling out the form
A cross examination
For what seemed like an age
I’m on the final page
Then the pop-up message box says alas
System crash

CHORUS

VERSE 3
I pinned my hopes to the promise of a tax return
I never learn
A river only flows one way
Still a man can pray
And as the laden letter hit the mat
I read it back
Unfortunately, we’re informing you…

CHORUS

MIDDLE

For I have no more wages to come

CHORUS

And the fruit just fall from the tree

Where all the chance takers are brave

How much must I talk?
Til’ fortune it favours the brave

Debt train

Chords: Fm G# Cm Fm

Here’s my tale of wow
My elation at excess
I hereby state it for the record
And confess my success

I did buy now pay later
I went on a credit run
And for the benefit of being
I got two for one

I borrowed more than I’ve got
To buy more than I need
That cut don’t heal well
This sucker bleeds

I’m going to go to the casino
And win my way back
To get out of the red
I’ll put it all on black

[Experimental instrumental]

I blame it on the mailman
I curse his children
For first the mail orders
And then the orders in the mail

The slope is more slippery
The lower I get
For another day older
I go a week in debt

I don’t see an end to this
Long tunnel of pain
And the light at the end of it
Turned out to be a train

When you’re standin’ in a hole
And all you’re holdin’ is a spade
The only thing you’ve got left to do
Is to dig yourself a grave

Dinner party soundtrack

INTRO
G Em
Music like wine, you find it hard to define
Am C
You go with what your friends have

You pick the bland stuff, don’t want to rock the boat
You’ve struck it lucky, this album’s for you

VERSES
Now you can
G Em C D
Play this album at your dinner parties
Softly in the background, you’ll hardly notice it’s there

The melodies are subtle and it’s a very rich sound
The producer was top notch and the band is sublime

So I hope you, play this album at your dinner parties
Every aspect has been carefully designed

It’s mostly choruses on steady repeat
None of the bones, just all of the meat

I hope you, play this album at your dinner parties
It won’t upset you there are no big ideas

The lyrics are vague, the singing mumbled
You can make it mean whatever you want

So go and, play this album at your dinner parties
Impress your friends with something they haven’t heard of

Mock their taste and say they’re so out of touch
Tell them they're obviously not getting out very much

Then they will, buy this album for their dinner parties
Soon my music will be everywhere

Etc.

Come the end I’ll need to know that I have friends

The cabin song

VERSE 1
Am C G
I’m sitting in a cabin in the woods
Am C G
There ain’t nobody for miles around
Am C G
No electricity, or telephone
Am C G
I really like living by my own
F
I’m authentic
Dm C G
This is my cabin song
Dm C G
This is my cabin song

VERSE 2
I’m sitting on my Daddy’s trunk
Filled with all his worldly junk
He died when I was only nine
Now his sorrow has turned into mine
I’m depressed
This is my cabin song
This is my cabin song

VERSE 3
I’m sitting in a cabin in the woods
Eating a deer that I killed myself
I chased it cos I don’t own a gun
And I’m eating it raw cos I can’t afford a fire
I’m stone cold poor
This is my cabin song
This is my cabin song

VERSE 4
I’m sitting in a cabin in the woods
A cabin that I built myself
That wall there’s from my brother’s boat
He could never get that damn thing to float
I’m a self-made man
This is my cabin song
This is my cabin song

VERSE 5
I’m sitting in a cabin in the woods
With only my guitar for company
I write songs about my cabin and the woods
And a cousin that I almost kissed
That one big chance for love I missed
They’re getting me lots of hits on my myspace
And they say that I will be a star
I’m big in Europe
This is my cabin song
This is my cabin song

The ballad of Jolie Holland

VERSE 1
G Dm C
As you shuffled on stage I knew we were in for trouble
You looked like you’d rather be anywhere but there

You started playing and it was nothing like the CD
None of the, none of the energy
Your voice was way too much in the background
And that can’t be the band that played on the album

CHORUS
In short,
It was a big disappointment to see you live [3 gospel singers]
A real letdown [Jack]

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I’d been looking forward to it

It was a big disappointment to see you live
It was a shock

It was a big disappointment to see you live
You must have a great producer

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Although you’re co-credited

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Maybe live’s not your forte

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Or maybe you were just having an off-day

VERSE 2
Halfway through I made my way over to he sound guy
I said what’s going on this is nothing like the CD
He said son she’s like this every night

You were complaining about the lighting
You’re on stage for Christ’s sake
You know it’s insecurity with a lot of artists
I hope you can turn it around - It’s so unnecessary

CHORUS
It was a big disappointment to see you live
Tom Waits would be turning in his grave

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I think I’ve made my feelings clear

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I’d still go and see you again

It was a big disappointment to see you live
But I might heckle

Mad men

F
When you work in advertising
Bf
People want to know your name
G
They want to hear about what you do
C
They know people look up to you

When they hear you work in advertising
Young girls often wet themselves
Big men want to hold your hand
Policeman want a lock of your hair

When you work in advertising
Everybody wants to be your friend
Cos they think that you know people
People who know people

Who don’t work in advertising
But are actually on TV
And who all their friends have heard of
But until then you will do

Cos you work in advertising
And it’s all money for nothing
You sell microwaves and color TVs
And you get your chicks for free

When you work in advertising
People want to go down on you
Work on your whims and wants
In elevators and restaurants

[Hammond solo]

When you work in advertising
You are the epitomy of cool
Almost as good as being a rockstar
Much better than being a doctor

Cos when you work in advertising
You’re saving people’s lives
Helping them to get better things
And… and… buy stuff

When you work in advertising
You’ll never be alone again
And be asked to all the parties
Women want to have your babies!

[Slap bass solo]

[The breakdown]

Etc.

Five years on

Inspired by David Bowie's 5 years. An updated version

VERSE
Am
Pushing through town to the market square
C Em
I new I’d get to see all the action there

They’d set up a stage and an enormous screen
It played out exactly as they’d clearly foreseen

The news guy was laughing loud with relief
Proud that he always held the belief

The countdown started and we all held our breath
To see if it would be a slow or sudden death

CHORUS
C Am
The five years are finally over
Em G
It’s the waiting that was killing me

Five years of fear and frustration
And a deep dull pain in my brain

But now the five years are finally over
And now we’re really at the end

VERSE 2
A girl my age went running off ahead
Mumbling something ‘bout going back to bed

A priest in the corner was reading us the rights
He could hardly be heard above the noise of the fights

While two young lovers not so worried about sin
Were getting the last of the loving in

You went looking for ice creams tall and long
Saying you didn’t want to be in a song

CHORUS

MIDDLE
F C G
I had still so much left undone
F C G
Like having a lifetime of low down, getting down, deeper done fun

CHORUS
