The ballad of Jolie Holland

VERSE 1
G Dm C
As you shuffled on stage I knew we were in for trouble
You looked like you’d rather be anywhere but there

You started playing and it was nothing like the CD
None of the, none of the energy
Your voice was way too much in the background
And that can’t be the band that played on the album

CHORUS
In short,
It was a big disappointment to see you live [3 gospel singers]
A real letdown [Jack]

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I’d been looking forward to it

It was a big disappointment to see you live
It was a shock

It was a big disappointment to see you live
You must have a great producer

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Although you’re co-credited

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Maybe live’s not your forte

It was a big disappointment to see you live
Or maybe you were just having an off-day

VERSE 2
Halfway through I made my way over to he sound guy
I said what’s going on this is nothing like the CD
He said son she’s like this every night

You were complaining about the lighting
You’re on stage for Christ’s sake
You know it’s insecurity with a lot of artists
I hope you can turn it around - It’s so unnecessary

CHORUS
It was a big disappointment to see you live
Tom Waits would be turning in his grave

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I think I’ve made my feelings clear

It was a big disappointment to see you live
I’d still go and see you again

It was a big disappointment to see you live
But I might heckle

First of all, Waits is alive. Second of all, I produce my records. I was really sick on part of that stretch of tour. And I'd had a family tragedy that I wasn't able to handle at all. If you heckle me I will kick your ass. That was Rachel Blumberg who Is the drummer on the record. Lord knows, almost nobody can afford to take Marc Ribot on the road, let alone the idea of hiring M Ward as guitar player. That was Sean Flinn and he's a hell of a guitar player. When I went to see Dylan, I wanted to walk out but I stuck around and regretted it.
