ACT

BPM 113

VERSE
F
Most of us live in a state of constant confusion
F
As automatic thoughts cause circuitous delusions
Bf
We don't want these feelings
F
So choose distractions

But with simple exercises, your mind can be taught
To watch the act of thinking without entangling in thoughts
Welcome emotions
Hold them to the light

Bf                               C
Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react

VERSE
For a minute let your mind go wherever it wants
Then write down the thoughts you had, every little point
When you've let the fish run
Reel him in

Now disobey on purpose the dictator within
Write down the phrase "I cannot walk around this room"
Then read it outloud
While you walk around

Or give your mind a name, and listen to it speak
Politely as you would to any stranger you meet
And agree or disagree
Respectfully

Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react

MIDDLE (whispering and downbeat)
Bf
For sticky thoughts
C
Sing them away
Dm
To the tune of
F
Happy Birthday

Or write them down
And carry them with you
Wherever you go
Through your day

Bf

Accept every memory, every faction
C
Override rigid reactions

WHISTLING VERSE

VERSE
So you've noticed now that there's more than one voice
An argument begins whenever you're faced with a choice
Does this to-and-fro
Feel familiar?

Write down what the voices are repeating at you
Don't think which are appropriate or even true
See them as quarrelling children
Watch in amusement

Now your mind's a bus, thoughts are passengers
But they're distracting your driving and causing a fuss
Keep your destination sign
Always in mind

Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react
Defuse your thoughts, choose how to react

Stop your problem-solving mind with defusion learning
Cos obsessive self-chatter is driven by the yearning
From some coherence
Between conflicting ideas

And with your mind, defuse thoughts away

VERSE

LONGER DRAFT:
VERSE
Most of us live in a state of mental confusion
With consistent criticism and circuitous delusions
We don't want these feelings
So choose distractions

But with some simple exercises, your mind can be taught
To watch the act of thinking without entangling in thoughts
Rise above the commands
The doubts and demands

And with your mind, defuse thoughts away

VERSE
Disobey on purpose the dictator within
To realise mind power is just an illusion
Think a limiting thought
And read it while you do it

I cannot sing this song
I cannot sing this song
I cannot sing this song
I cannot sing this song

With your mind, defuse thoughts away

BRIDGE
F                                G
Such a simple thing can do more than you've dreamt
Am                                                   G
Increasing pain tolerance by up to 40%
F
Remember thoughts are repetitive
G
So are easy to train
C
If you use the proper way
              F
your brain
G
Cos you'll end up low,
F                          G
If you let them run the show

VERSE
Next give your mind a name, and listen to it speak
Politely like you would to any stranger you meet
And agree or disagree
I call mine Gregory

Now Gregory's demanding with lots of opinions
And he always needs something, but I'm not his minion
Although I do appreciate him
And thank him for the advice
G
You have anything else to add Gregory?

With your mind, defuse thoughts away

Now a short mental break

INSTRUMENTAL VERSE (Whistling)

What a long song... but it needs to be longer

MIDDLE (whispering and downbeat)
C
Another technique...

For sticky thoughts
G
Is to sing them away
Am
To the tune of
C
Happy Birthday

F
Or write them down
G
On a special piece of paper
Am
Carry them with you
F
like they're sacred
G
And look at them later

VERSE
But perhaps you've noticed that there's more than one voice
An argument whenever you're faced with a choice
Does this to-and-fro
Feel familiar?

Write down these voices while they're screaming at you
Don't think which are appropriate or even true
Watch them as quarrelling children
In mild-amusement

With your mind, defuse thoughts away

VERSE
Or picture your brain as if it were a bus
You are the driver - thoughts are passengers
But they're being distracting
Demanding diversions

So visualise the sign you've put on the front of your bus
Such as "Destination happiness via service to others"
You'll need presence of mind
You'll need it all the time

Then with your mind, defuse thoughts away
With your focus, defuse thoughts away
With attention, defuse thoughts away
